Request to Dr. Lewis

Dr. Lewis,

I just noticed that  flashers have been  installed  on the road in front of Fauquier High School.  The posted speed on this road for some distance is 25 MPH and the flashers indicate the speed is 25 MPH when flashing.  Why were they installed and what purpose do they serve?  How much did they cost, and what was the funding source?

Dr. Lewis Response

The situation you cite at FHS is similar to the WMS site where we also recently placed school speed limit signs.  Although the speed limit is already 25 mph at FHS and WMS, people don’t always drive 25 mph by those schools.  The signs act as a reminder during critical student travel times.  The school signs may appear to be a redundancy; however, I question whether steps taken to insure our students’ safety can ever be considered a redundancy.  I approved and support the placement of signs in these two locations.  I have copied Ms. Bourne on this email reply and she will supply the cost and funding source for you.

Janice Bourne Response:

Mr. Weber,

The flashing lights with installation at FHS were $15,681.  The cost was funded from the comprehensive maintenance plan budget.  Janice
